The tour might be slightly different, with stops on the way and may include less or more walking distance. We have the right to change the itinerary depending on the situation of the eruption.
This is the first volcanic eruption on Reykjanes peninsula in 800 years. The eruption started 19th of March 2021, and has been on and off several times since. Volcano experts foresee that this will continue for several years now. It is a impressive lava eruption, peaceful and beautiful. The area is only around 30km (18,6mi) from the Icelandic capital Reykjavik. You can even see the red sky glowing over the eruption from Reykjavik. Reykjanes peninsula is a very volcanic active area and the eruption in Geldingadalir / Merardalir has been expected for a long time as it has had many earthquakes there lately, and that is often the start of a volcano eruption. This is an extremely interesting eruption to view and has attracted tourist, photographs, and geologists from all over the world.
We offer a great hiking tour to the active volcano area with a guidance. The tour starts with a pick-up from either your hotel in Reykjavik or nearby bus stop. We drive to Reykjanes Penisula, to the volcano site, and therefrom walk together with the guide to the eruption itself. The hiking tour is demanding ca. 4-5 hrs hike.
